Chronic lung disease

COPD is a collective term for a group of chronic lung diseases that lead to obstructed airflow through the airways. It is a serious lung disease with permanent reduced lung function.
COPD is a chronic inflammatory reaction that damages the bronchi and the tissue in the lungs. The disease develops slowly, and for people who do not exercise, the disease may have progressed far before they notice that their breathing or fitness has weakened.

Smoking is the most common cause of COPD. The risk increases with increasing tobacco consumption and the number of years of smoking. Over 80 percent of those with COPD smoke or have smoked.

Long-term smoking initiates an inflammatory process that damages the mucous membrane in the respiratory tract. This results in connective tissue formation and narrowing of the airways.

Other causes of COPD can be:

air pollution in the working environment from dust, smoke, gas and steam (Occupational COPD)
childhood asthma frequent respiratory infections at a young age can contribute to the development of the disease
hereditary factors also come into play and give a greater or lesser predisposition to developing the disease

An inherited enzyme deficiency, alpha 1-atrypsin deficiency, can lead to destruction of the small air bladders (emphysema), failing lung function and COPD.

Exposure to a lot of dust and smoke causes the damage to develop more quickly. This type of coal accounts for approx. 1 percent of all cases. This form of COPD often appears at a younger age than is otherwise common for COPD.
